4 Tips for Photographing Halloween

With Halloween just around the corner, I wanted to pop in to give you some tips for getting the best pictures you can during this fun holiday!

Tip 1 - Don't forget the details!

There are SO many things to capture during Halloween, so don't be tempted to focus just on the costumes. Here are just a few suggestions for other things you can capture:

  • Pumpkin carving

  • Pets

  • Decorations

  • Cookies

  • Costume details

  • Jack O Lanterns

Tip 2 - Consider Converting To Black and White

To make your Halloween photos look a little creepier, try converting images to black and white. Try this out with images of things like getting your kids into their costumes, carving out the pumpkin, or out trick or treating. Black and white can instantly turn them into something a little spookier!

Tip 3 - Plan a Dress Rehearsal

Trying to capture the perfect portrait on Halloween can be tough when candy is calling! But, kids will love the opportunity to take a photo in their costume before the big day. Another great way to get kids to cooperate is to encourage them to do their best impression of the character they are dressed up as.

Tip 4 - Find Pockets of Light

The main complaint when it comes to photographing Halloween is having to work in low light situations. Depending on when you go trick or treating, it may be completely dark which makes taking photos a challenge. My advice here is to find pockets of light.

Find small areas where there is at least some light, and place your subjects in it. Some examples would be open doors, under a street light, headlamps, in the beam of a torch, in the light emitted by candles or a jack o lantern - anything that has light and where you can put your subject within it.
